The last thing you put on before leaving the house has the ability to make or break an outfit. Think about it: Your custom suit will be ruined the minute you pair it with cheap-looking dress shoes. The highly coveted Balenciaga Triple S would be all kinds of wrong in a corporate environment. And those flip flops? Anywhere other than the beach will be a cause for sore eyes. Which is why it’s important to not only own the right kind of shoes but also know when to wear what. Keeping that in mind, we’re dedicating this one to the seven pairs of shoes that every guy must own:
You can wear them to the office, for date nights, for weddings, the…you get it! What makes these shoes the dressiest option in any guy’s footwear arsenal are the little perforated details, which were originally designed for English and Irish countrymen working in soggy fields so they could turn the wingtips over and shake ‘em dry. Now, of course, the tiny holes are purely for decorative purposes. So save yours for days when there is not a cloud in sight.
When the dressiest shoes feel, well, too dressy, opt for Oxfords. It’s hard to go wrong with both, black or brown. Look for a boss-level pair that’s not too pointy, not too square, but a nice rounded toe.
Loafers may have started off as the preferred shoe of choice among Ivy League students and American presidents, but somewhere along the line, loafers became cool. Michael Jackson wearing a pair of polished black ones for his first time performing the iconic moonwalk obviously helped its case. Wear ‘em with no socks and the hem of your pants rolled up for casual occasions and throw on socks for when you have to step into the office.
In this current menswear climate, picking up a pair of sneakers is a no-brainer. But before you jump on the hype train, consider going with a streamlined pair that will go with everything else in your wardrobe. The best part? These sneakers will stand the test of time even when the hype culture eventually fades away.
Similar to a brogue, except the Derby does not feature the traditional perforation and has an open lace with eyelet tabs sewn onto the top of the uppers. When you need something that’s chiller than Oxfords, Derbies will come in handy.Similar to a brogue, except the Derby does not feature the traditional perforation and has an open lace with eyelet tabs sewn onto the top of the uppers. Nothing says badass more than a pair of kickass boots. For suits, consider slick Chelsea boots and for more casual events, try combat boots or hiking boots. If the latter two feels too rugged for your taste, go for ones that are made with luxe fabrics like suede or velvet.
Thanks to espadrilles being made with breathable fabrics, they are a great alternative to flip flops. Worth considering when it’s hot outside and you haven’t got a pedicure done. Or when you have to wear a suit and the dress code’s relaxed.
So there you have it: The seven shoes that every guy needs to have in his shoe closet. Splurge a little on quality so they last you that much longer. And remember to stock up on the classics before opting for the funkier take on each.
